FAQ

Answer: No, students should try and train as much as they can in order to progress quicker. However if they cannot attend due to family or work commitments then that if ok.

Q. Do I need to be fit to start training?

Answer: No, people of all abilities can start Thai Boxing. Everyone should train to their own ability and know their own limits. It is recommended that students pace themselves on their first training lesson as Thai boxing is very different from other forms of training. All muscle groups are worked in a single training lesson therefore making Thai Boxing different to other forms of physical fitness commonly undertaken eg. running, weight training, circuit training etc.

Q. Do I have to do sparring?

Answer: Students will not be asked to undertake any activities which they are not 100% happy about.

Q. What should I wear on my first training session?

Answer: All you need to wear is a pair of shorts or tracksuit bottoms with a plain vest or tee shirt. Try to stick to the club colours of black shorts with a red t-shirt or vest. Training is done in bare feet.

Q. What if I do not have a partner to come with?

Answer: This does not matter at all as there will always be someone for you to train with. If there are odd numbers, students can train in threes. You will always be paired up with someone of the same height, weight and ability where possible.

Q. What equipment do I need?

Answer: Thai kicking pads are provided for all students to use. Boxing gloves are an essential part of training and are not provided. Students can use their own gloves if they have some or buy some through the club. Student can train if they do not have boxing gloves however it is recommended that gloves are bought in the first few weeks of training. Focus mitts, shin pads, punch bags, floor to ceiling balls etc can all be purchased through the club.

Q. Where can I buy the equipment and uniform from?

Answer: All equipment and uniform can be bought through the club. Delivery is expected to be approximately 1 week and all equipment is required to be paid for in advance.

Q. What does a typical training lesson consist of?

Answer: A typical training class starts with two rounds of warn up and stretching in order to increase the heart rate and prepare the body for physical exercise therefore reducing the risk of injury. This will be performed with students in lines. Students will then be paired up and practise the following activities: • Combinations using Thai kicking pads • Combinations using focus mitts • Street self defence techniques • Sparring • Combinations using big gloves • Shadow boxing • Fresh air training The activities listed above will form the main basis of the lesson. A dedicated cool down will then be done to reduce the risk of injury.

Answer: Thai Boxing is a full contact martial art and therefore should be treated with respect. Thai Boxing should not be used outside the training classes. Students should not train in such a way that they will cause injury to themselves or others.

Q. Do I have to do any other training to supplement Thai Boxing?

Answer: This is not essential as Thai Boxing is a full body work out using all muscle groups, therefore, building strength, physical fitness and flexibility. It is recommended that students try to train as much as possible always taking the required number of rest days

Q. Do I have to be flexible to start Thai Boxing?

Answer: No, people at all levels of flexibility can start Thai Boxing. Thai Boxing covers a great array of kicking techniques, therefore kicks and techniques requiring a low level of flexibility can be mastered first. Gradually, through training students’ levels of flexibility will increase until all techniques can be performed effectively. It is recommended that students practise stretching at home for approximately 10 – 15 mins per day in order to achieve the best results. However this is not essential. You should always listen to your body, if you experience any physical pain of any kind it is recommended that students rest and seek medical advice.

Q. Am I expected to buy all the equipment and uniform in one go?

Answer: No, students can buy the training equipment and uniform at their own pace as and when they can afford.

Q. Am I expected to join the club straight away?

Answer: Students can train for approximately 2 weeks before they are asked to join. All memberships and insurance will be done through the British Thai Boxing Council.

Q. What is the youngest age a student can train?

Answer: It is recommended that parents wait until their children are approximately 6 years old in order to let them develop both physically and mentally before starting training. However I will teach any individual who is receptive to training i.e. respectful, disciplined and physically able.
